In a sweeping expansion of immigration restrictions, the United States is pausing immigrant visa processing for 75 countries. This move will significantly impact applicants from nations such as Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, and Yemen, who now face indefinite freezes on their visa applications.
Reassessing Screening and Vetting Processes
According to the State Department, consular officers have been directed to refuse visa applications until the screening and vetting processes can be reassessed. This pause on immigrant visa processing will go into effect on January 21st.
Tightened Public Charge Criteria
The new restrictions also include tightened public charge criteria, which could lead to the denial of applications from older or overweight applicants, as well as those with a history of using cash assistance or institutionalization.
Potential Immigrants Deemed Ineligible
“The State Department will use its long-standing authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge,” explained State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
Potential Impact on Families and Businesses
This sweeping visa freeze is likely to have far-reaching consequences, impacting families seeking to reunite and businesses relying on skilled foreign workers. As the situation continues to evolve, it will be crucial for those affected to stay informed and explore all available options.
